Actor Khushbu Sundar has spoken about losing more than 40 kg over five years, but her weight-loss journey was not built around crash diets or giving up every food she enjoys.
Instead, she has described a gradual approach centred on portion control, mindful eating, regular physical activity and sustainable food choices.
One habit she particularly credits is inspired by the Japanese way of eating: serving food in a small bowl or plate rather than filling a large plate.
What is Khushbu Sundar’s Japanese eating habit?
Speaking about her relationship with food, Khushbu said people should eat when they are genuinely hungry rather than automatically eating every few hours.
She also described adopting what she called a typical Japanese way of eating, where food is served in smaller portions.

Her reasoning was straightforward: a smaller serving allows a person to assess whether they are actually full before taking another portion.
Khushbu said she now keeps a small plate at home rather than serving herself a large quantity of food at once.
The approach she described is therefore less about eliminating particular foods and more about being conscious of how much is being eaten.
How did Khushbu Sundar lose more than 40 kg?
Khushbu has previously spoken about weighing around 98 kg and said she began thinking seriously about her health after seeing herself in a film with Rajinikanth.

She also recalled experiencing knee pain at the time.
Rather than completely eliminating her favourite foods, she focused on reducing portions.
Mutton biryani, for instance, remains one of her favourite dishes. Instead of giving it up, she said she would have a smaller serving of rice with a piece of mutton.
She has similarly spoken about continuing to enjoy Indian sweets and ice cream during her weight-loss journey, while being mindful of how much she consumed.
Does Khushbu Sundar avoid sugar and favourite foods?
Not completely.
Khushbu has said she enjoys tea with milk and sugar and has continued having it in moderation. She has also maintained that occasional indulgence is not necessarily a problem as long as a person knows when to stop.
That makes portion control one of the recurring themes in her account of weight loss.
Her approach has been to make changes that she can maintain rather than completely remove foods she enjoys from her diet.
What other habits did Khushbu follow?
Reports about her routine have highlighted early-morning walks, clean eating and outdoor activities as part of her lifestyle changes.
Her reported diet also included a breakfast rich in protein and fibre, while she reduced refined white foods such as maida.
The emphasis throughout her account has been consistency rather than a short-term diet.

In August 2025, Times Entertainment reported Khushbu speaking about the broader impact of her transformation, including changes to her mental well-being.
Why is portion control central to her approach?
Khushbu’s experience highlights a simple distinction between what you eat and how much you eat.
Her account suggests that she did not view weight loss as requiring the complete elimination of favourite foods. Instead, she focused on serving sizes and being more deliberate about eating.

The small-plate habit fits into that philosophy: start with less, eat mindfully and decide whether more food is actually needed.
It is also worth noting that Khushbu is describing her own experience, not presenting the approach as a guaranteed weight-loss method for everyone. Weight management can depend on several individual factors, and sustainable dietary changes may look different from person to person.
