Who is Sumit Roy? Abhishek Banerjee’s PA arrested in Shalbani land scam case

Sumit Roy, the personal assistant (PA) to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, was arrested from Banerjee’s Kalighat residence on Thursday, shortly after the Supreme Court cancelled the protection granted to him. The arrest is linked to the Shalbani land scam case.

CID and STF teams reached Abhishek Banerjee’s residence after receiving information that Roy was inside. A large team of officials, along with a videographer as part of the arrest procedure, arrived at the house. Roy was subsequently taken to Bhabani Bhavan for questioning.

    Who is Sumit Roy?

Sumit Roy has been described by TMC insiders as one of Abhishek Banerjee’s closest aides. For years, party insiders have referred to him as Abhishek’s “shadow”, highlighting his presence around the TMC leader since his early political years.

According to several TMC insiders, Roy and Abhishek Banerjee have known each other since their school days. As Banerjee’s influence within the party grew, Roy continued to remain part of his inner circle and became an important figure in the organisation.

Why was Sumit Roy considered influential?

TMC leaders claim Roy’s role extended beyond organisational work and reached administrative circles. Although he did not hold an elected position, party members viewed him as an important link to Abhishek Banerjee.

According to multiple TMC insiders, party workers and local leaders seeking an audience with Banerjee often had to contact Roy first. Some leaders claimed that getting an appointment with Roy could itself be difficult. Sources also alleged that senior administrative officials and high-ranking officers sometimes had to wait for hours to meet him.

    Seen as the ‘second-in-command’

Party insiders say Roy held considerable influence within parts of the organisation. Leaders familiar with the functioning of Abhishek Banerjee’s political office claimed that instructions from the TMC leader were often communicated through Roy.

    Role in Diamond Harbour affairs

TMC sources also said Roy was involved in organisational and constituency-related matters in Diamond Harbour, Abhishek Banerjee’s parliamentary constituency.

Local leaders claimed that political matters, administrative requests and constituency-related issues were often routed through him, placing Roy at an important point of contact for those seeking access to Banerjee’s decision-making channels.

Is Arsalan’s food safe to eat? Restaurant clarifies Achari Kebab aroma after West Bengal food safety inspection

The Food Safety Department of West Bengal has stepped up inspections at restaurants and eateries across the state to check whether food safety rules and hygiene standards are being followed. The inspections have brought several food establishments under scrutiny, including Kolkata’s popular Arsalan Restaurant and Caterer.

Following a recent inspection and concerns surrounding its Achari Kebab, the restaurant has now responded to questions over the safety and quality of its food. Arsalan has maintained that the distinctive tangy aroma and taste of the kebab come from its achari-style marinade, while reaffirming its food-safety, hygiene and sourcing practices.

What did Arsalan say about its Achari Kebab?

According to Arsalan, the tangy and pickled smell and flavour of the Achari Kebab are part of the recipe. The restaurant said the aroma of the marinade should not be taken as proof that the meat or poultry used in the dish has spoiled.

In a statement addressing the issue, Arsalan COO Hamza Ahsan said food safety and hygiene have always been part of the restaurant’s day-to-day operations, rather than measures introduced only after an inspection.

Addressing the concerns over the Achari Kebab, Ahsan said, “the tangy and pickled aroma is an inherent characteristic of the achari-style marinade and is reflective of the recipe itself, and should not be misconstrued as an indication of spoilage.” He added that Arsalan regularly procures meat, poultry, fish, dairy and eggs throughout the year, while its spices are sourced from FSSAI-approved companies.

Ahsan further said the restaurant conducts regular food-safety briefings and training for its teams. He noted that Arsalan is now strengthening these systems through enhanced compliance checks, supply-chain audits and mandatory third-party hygiene and quality audits across its kitchens.

“We value the trust our patrons have placed in Arsalan for over two decades, and we remain committed to serving them the best in food quality, hygiene and safety, every single day,” he said.

How does Arsalan handle its food supplies?

The restaurant said that its outlets depend on frequent procurement because of the volume of food prepared and consumed each day. Perishable ingredients are generally used on the same day, while some items may be stored for one to two days when necessary.

Arsalan also said its staff receive periodic food-safety and hygiene briefings covering proper food handling and related practices.

What is Arsalan doing after the inspection?

As part of its efforts to tighten food-safety practices, Arsalan plans to introduce additional compliance checks and supply-chain audits across its outlets. Its kitchens will also undergo mandatory third-party hygiene and quality audits, adding another layer of oversight to its existing processes.

On the inspection itself, the management maintained that it respects the role of regulatory authorities and does not intend to contradict the department’s findings. It will follow instructions issued by the concerned authorities and continue to cooperate with applicable food-safety requirements.

For customers asking, “Is Arsalan’s food safe to eat?”, the restaurant’s latest statement sets out its position on the Achari Kebab, sourcing practices, food handling and the additional safety measures it plans to introduce.

Kolkata’s Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durga Puja hits legal hurdle after poll ends in tie, HC to decide next

The fate of Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durga Puja, Kolkata’s oldest community Durga Puja, now lies before the Calcutta High Court after an election for key managing committee posts ended without a clear winner.

The puja, which is entering its 108th year, saw a deadlock on Sunday as both sides received 33 votes each for the posts of general secretary and four managing committee members. The High Court had earlier appointed two observers to oversee the election.

Bagbazar Puja election ends in 33-33 tie

A total of 66 members voted out of the 77 eligible voters. Eleven members, including several prominent members of the organising body, stayed away from the election.

Goutam Neogi, who is tied for the general secretary’s post, said the committee president, Samar Kumar Pal, should have been allowed to use a casting vote under the organisation’s bylaws when the election ended in a stalemate.

“The observers did not allow the casting vote after an objection from one of the parties. We are now awaiting the court’s decision,” Times of India reported Neogi as saying.

The observers were appointed by the High Court after a plea was filed by the rival camp.

    Woman alleges assault over voting

The election was also followed by a police complaint alleging assault and intimidation. A woman resident of Bosepara Lane approached Shyampukur Police Station, alleging that she was heckled, abused and physically assaulted after voting against a particular group.

Sukumar Mondal, who was named in the complaint, is reportedly aligned with former ward 7 councillor Bapi Ghosh. Ghosh has been seeking control of the puja’s organising committee since last year.

The dispute has added uncertainty to preparations for one of Kolkata’s most prominent traditional Durga Pujas. Organisers are yet to begin preparations in full swing, raising concern in the locality as the festival approaches.

    Why Bagbazar Sarbojanin is significant

Bagbazar Sarbojanin began in 1919 at 55 Bagbazar Street as Nebubagan Barowari Durga Puja. After shifting through locations including Pashupati Bose Lane and Bagbazar Kali temple, it eventually moved to its permanent grounds.

Social worker Nagendra Nath Ghoshal helped formalise the committee and gave it the name Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durgotsav.

In 1930, Calcutta Municipal Corporation alderman Durgacharan Bandyopadhyay became president and introduced a Swadeshi exhibition to promote Indian-made products. The venue was also associated with freedom movement activities. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose served as president in 1938-39, while Chittaranjan Das also used the venue to mobilise support and provide shelter to underground revolutionaries.

The puja continues to draw lakhs of devotees every year and retains its traditional format, including its well-known ekchala Durga idol, rather than adopting theme-based presentations.

Members seeking re-election have said they oppose a minister or councillor becoming the face of the puja. A panel backed by former minister Shashi Panja lost the 2022 election. Ghosh, who was then a councillor, allegedly attempted to take control of the puja last year but did not succeed.

Tired voice after teaching? 5 everyday habits teachers should avoid

For many students, the memory of a teacher with a powerful voice is hard to forget. A single shout could often bring a noisy classroom back under control. But repeatedly speaking over classroom chatter, teaching for hours and dealing with dusty environments can put considerable pressure on the voice.

For teachers, vocal health is especially important because speaking is central to their daily work. Long teaching hours, loud classrooms and limited opportunities to rest the voice can gradually lead to strain.

Dr Murarji Ghadge, Senior Consultant ENT Surgeon & Sleep Disorder Specialist, Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, told News 18 that signs of an overused voice in teachers can include hoarseness, throat pain, frequent throat clearing, a tired voice or trouble speaking at the end of the day.

Also Read | Do you know why people say ‘Bless you’ after sneezing? 8 surprising facts to know

Here are five everyday habits teachers should avoid to protect their voices.

    Constantly raising your voice

Trying to speak louder than classroom noise can place unnecessary pressure on the voice. Teachers can reduce this effort by improving classroom acoustics, using a microphone when possible and getting students’ attention before beginning to speak. Maintaining a comfortable pitch and volume is preferable to repeatedly forcing the voice louder.

      Not drinking enough water

Teachers often spend hours speaking without taking regular breaks. Staying hydrated can help keep the vocal cords moist and allow them to vibrate more easily. Sipping water throughout the day is better than waiting until the throat becomes dry. Water should remain the preferred drink, particularly when excessive coffee or sugary beverages leave some people feeling dehydrated.

        Repeated throat clearing

Frequent, forceful throat clearing may provide temporary relief but can increase irritation because it causes the vocal cords to collide forcefully. Teachers can instead take a sip of water or swallow gently when the urge to clear the throat arises.

          Continuing to speak without rest

The voice also needs recovery time after a long teaching day. Giving it periods of rest can help it recover from the demands of classroom teaching.

Whispering when the voice feels strained

Whispering may seem like an easy way to rest a tired voice, but it can sometimes require more effort. When the voice is strained, proper rest is a better approach than continuing to speak in a whisper.

When should teachers see an ENT specialist?

Persistent voice problems should not simply be considered part of teaching. If a voice change continues for more than two or three weeks, or is accompanied by pain, difficulty swallowing or breathing, an ENT specialist should examine the voice. Early evaluation can help identify vocal-cord problems and prevent temporary strain from becoming a longer-term issue.

From ‘you complete me’ to ‘I need my space’: How Gen Z is redefining love and commitment

For years, popular ideas about romance have centred on becoming one with your partner. Phrases such as “You complete me” and “I can’t live without you” have often presented love as something that requires complete emotional and personal involvement. But relationship expectations are shifting, particularly among Gen Z, who are increasingly placing value on individuality alongside emotional closeness.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Chandni Gaglani, EVP and Head of Aisle, explained how younger people are approaching love, commitment and personal freedom differently.

Gen Z wants love without losing individuality

According to Chandni, traditional ideas of relationships often placed togetherness at the centre. Couples were expected to spend much of their time together, share friends and social circles, make decisions jointly and allow the relationship to become a major part of their identity.

Also Read | Would you date someone with completely different political views?

Gen Z, however, appears more comfortable maintaining the life they had before entering a relationship.

“For Gen Z, finding a meaningful relationship does not necessarily mean giving up the life that existed before it. They want love, companionship and emotional intimacy, but increasingly, they also want the freedom to remain individuals within the relationship,” highlighted Chandni.

“Their careers, friendships, interests, ambitions and personal space continue to matter. This isn’t necessarily a rejection of commitment. Instead, it reflects a changing understanding of what commitment can look like: choosing someone without having to lose yourself in the process,” added Chandni.

Why personal space matters in modern relationships

Chandni noted that having separate friendships, individual interests, solo travel plans, personal routines or time alone does not necessarily signal emotional distance for Gen Z.

“Compatibility is no longer just about enjoying the same things or wanting the same future. It can also mean being comfortable with each other’s differences and giving each other the room to explore them,” said Chandni.

Love can complement identity, not replace it

The idea of a partner “completing” someone is also giving way to a more individual-centred understanding of love.

“The idea of a partner completing you is gradually giving way to something more balanced: finding someone who complements the life you are already building. This doesn’t make the relationship less meaningful,” explained Chandni.

For Gen Z, commitment can mean sharing a life while continuing to nurture personal ambitions, friendships, hobbies and interests.

              Commitment without losing yourself

At the heart of this changing approach is the possibility of staying emotionally connected while retaining a sense of self. Separate interests, shared values and time apart can coexist with a committed relationship.

Gen Z may not be seeking less commitment, but a different form of it: companionship without confinement, intimacy without dependence and love that leaves room for individuality.

“Because perhaps the healthiest version of love isn’t you. It is I know who I am, you know who you are, and we still choose each other,” concluded Chandni.

What is dark matter? Everything to know about the universe’s biggest mystery scientists are trying to solve

Dark matter has remained one of the universe’s biggest mysteries for decades. Scientists know that something invisible appears to be shaping galaxies and other cosmic structures, yet they have never been able to directly identify what it is. Now, a mysterious signal recorded nearly 1.6 kilometres beneath the ground in a former South Dakota gold mine has brought the search for dark matter back into focus.

Detected by the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, the unusual event could be linked to a hypothetical dark matter particle, although researchers have stressed that it is far too early to call it a discovery. So, what exactly is this dark matter? Why do scientists believe in its existence and why do they hunt for dark matter underground?

              What is dark matter?

Dark matter is a form of matter that does not seem to emit, absorb or reflect any amount of light which is adequate enough to make it detectable through telescopic observations. The term “dark” means that it does not interact with the electromagnetic radiation in any detectable manner; it does not imply any particular color.

Also Read | World Letter Writing day: The stories behind 8 famous letters of love, war, ambition and loss

Scientists estimate that dark matter makes up about 27% of the universe. Ordinary matter, including stars, planets and living things, accounts for roughly 5%. Most of the rest is attributed to dark energy.

              Dark Matter
(Representational Image) A strange underground signal has renewed the search for elusive dark matter | AI Generated

How do scientists know dark matter exists?

The strongest clues come from gravity. Astronomers have observed galaxies and galaxy clusters behaving as if they contain considerably more mass than can be seen.

In the 1930s, Fritz Zwicky found that galaxies in the Coma Cluster were moving too rapidly for visible matter alone to hold the cluster together. Later, Vera Rubin found that stars in spiral galaxies were also moving faster than expected, particularly those far from their galactic centres.

Gravitational lensing provides another important clue. A large object can bend light emitted from farther away, and that is how scientists detect mass that cannot be seen because of the effect of gravity.

Is dark matter the same as dark energy?

Not necessarily. While dark matter and dark energy are two different concepts, dark matter relates to the gravitational forces that structure galaxies.

The detector uses liquid xenon and searches for tiny signals produced when a possible dark matter particle interacts with a xenon atom.

Has dark matter finally been detected?

Not yet. The above-mentioned phenomenon is quite fascinating, but one such strange reading can never be considered as a proof of discovery. There should be more events with a similar behavior pattern for the phenomenon to be proved scientifically.

If dark matter could be discovered at some point of time in the future, it would help to understand better the universe and its evolution. The nature of dark matter continues to be one of the big puzzles of physics.

Do you know why people say ‘Bless you’ after sneezing? 8 surprising facts to know

Someone sneezes, and before you even think about it, someone nearby says, “Bless you.” It is an almost automatic reaction, but the reason behind it is anything but ordinary. Why a sneeze, of all things, became something people felt the need to respond to has puzzled historians and fueled folklore for centuries.

Was it once linked to the fear of disease? Did people really believe a sneeze could make the soul leave the body? And what about the popular claim that your heart stops when you sneeze? The story behind this everyday phrase brings together ancient beliefs, religious traditions, health concerns and old superstitions. Here are eight facts that explain how “Bless you” became one of the most familiar responses to a sneeze.

              There is no confirmed origin

The history of saying “Bless you” after a sneeze cannot be traced to a single person, place or event. Different explanations have emerged over time, and historians have linked the practice to several traditions surrounding sneezing.

Also Read | From tote bags to therapy talk: Is the ‘performative’ male changing men?

That makes the popular stories about its beginnings interesting, but they should not automatically be treated as established fact.

                ‘Bless you’ after sneezing
(Representational Image) A simple ‘Bless you’ carries centuries of history and tradition | AI Generated

Did a sixth-century plague start the tradition?

A familiar explanation connects “God bless you” with a plague outbreak in Rome around 590 CE. According to this theory, sneezing was regarded as a worrying indication of illness during the outbreak, prompting people to respond with a blessing.

However, this is a widely repeated explanation rather than a proven account of how the expression originated. Historical evidence does not establish the plague story as the single source of the custom.

People were responding to sneezes much earlier

The tradition may have roots that are considerably older than the sixth century. Roman author Pliny the Elder referred to the practice in his first-century work Natural History. His discussion suggests that sneezing already had social or cultural significance in the ancient world.

This is one reason the plague theory cannot simply be accepted as the beginning of the tradition.

A sneeze once carried a deeper meaning

Before modern medicine explained sneezing as a bodily reflex, people could attach very different meanings to it. In various cultures, a sneeze might be interpreted as an omen, connected with a person’s health or regarded as an event that required a protective response.

These interpretations helped give an otherwise ordinary bodily action a special place in social customs.

Was the soul thought to escape during a sneeze?

Folklore offers another explanation for the protective response. One enduring belief suggests that sneezing could allow a person’s soul or spirit to leave the body, making a blessing seem like a way to protect them.

Another tradition associated sneezing with evil spirits. Neither idea has scientific evidence behind it, but both became part of the folklore that surrounded sneezing in earlier times.

Does your heart really stop when you sneeze?

No. The idea that the heart stops during a sneeze is a common myth.

A powerful sneeze changes pressure inside the chest and can temporarily influence blood flow and the rhythm of the heartbeat. Those brief changes may explain why someone could experience an unusual sensation around the time of a sneeze, but the heart does not simply stop.

Sneezing traditions also exist in India

The meaning attached to a sneeze is not universal. In India, reactions can vary according to family traditions, region and community. Some people may regard sneezing as either auspicious or inauspicious in particular circumstances, while others attach no special meaning to it and respond out of everyday courtesy.

‘Bless you’ has a simpler meaning today

For many people, the phrase has moved far away from its older associations with superstition and religion. Saying “Bless you” can now simply be a polite response, an expression of concern or a small gesture of goodwill.

Other cultures have their own responses to sneezing, including expressions wishing someone good health or a long life.

Why do people say ‘Bless you’ after sneezing?

There is no single confirmed explanation. The familiar response appears to have emerged from several layers of cultural history, including ancient beliefs, concerns about illness, religious customs and social etiquette.

What may once have been linked to protection, omens or superstition has gradually become something much more ordinary: a quick and familiar response to a sneeze.

From tote bags to therapy talk: Is the ‘performative’ male changing men?

A tote bag, a paperback, wired headphones and a matcha on the table. Put them together and the internet may quickly decide what kind of man is sitting across the café. The “performative male” has become a familiar social media archetype, built around an image of sensitivity, culture and emotional openness.

But beneath the memes is a more serious question: can these visible signs of softer masculinity actually help weaken toxic masculinity, or are they simply another carefully constructed performance?

                              What is a performative male?

The term generally describes men who adopt an aesthetic associated with emotional awareness and progressive values. Tote bags, books by women writers, trendy drinks, indie music and conversations about therapy or healing have become part of the stereotype.

Celebrities such as Jacob Elordi, Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal are sometimes cited as polished examples of this image. Online, however, the archetype is less about any particular man and more about the cultural signals associated with a newer version of masculinity.

When emotional openness becomes a performance

The criticism centres on authenticity. Some observers argue that displaying feminist views or talking openly about feelings does not necessarily translate into emotional availability.

A man may appear comfortable discussing vulnerability while still struggling when genuine emotional support, patience or difficult conversations are required. In that sense, the aesthetic can become a substitute for meaningful behaviour.

The distinction is important because emotional intelligence is ultimately tested away from an audience.

                              Can practice change masculinity?

As per a News 18 report, psychologists make a useful distinction between pretending to possess a quality and deliberately practising it. New behaviours can initially feel unfamiliar, but repeated efforts to listen, communicate and remain emotionally present can eventually become natural.

That may explain why the performative male archetype is more complicated than the meme suggests. Not every man carrying a tote or reading feminist literature is necessarily putting on an act.

From internet meme to cultural shorthand

The trend has become recognisable enough to inspire look-alike contests in places including Seattle, New York and Jakarta. Their recurring accessories, books and fashion choices show how quickly an online stereotype can become a shared cultural reference.

Ultimately, the tote bag is beside the point. The more meaningful shift is whether men continue practising vulnerability when there is no audience. If softness becomes part of everyday behaviour rather than social presentation, it can contribute to a broader rethinking of masculinity.

Can you really listen with your heart? Understanding the art of listening

In everyday life, we often hear the advice to “listen with your heart, not your mind.” It sounds simple, but what does it really mean? In a spiritual context, the art of listening goes beyond simply hearing words. It is about receiving a teaching fully, without allowing the mind to decide what should be accepted and what should be ignored.

Listening with the mind vs listening with the heart

HH Guruji Sundar explains that listening with the mind can be useful in ordinary conversations. But when it comes to spiritual teachings or guidance that may challenge us, the mind can become a filter.

A seeker may hear an entire teaching but hold on only to the parts that feel familiar or comfortable. Other parts may be dismissed because they seem difficult, inconvenient or unrelated. This can explain why an important teaching may feel clear at one moment but seem to lose its impact later.

Listening with the heart calls for a different approach. Instead of immediately judging or analysing what is being said, the seeker receives it as a whole. Even words that are difficult to accept are given space to reach deeper.

What prevents us from truly listening?

Several habits can stand in the way of attentive listening. These include interrupting before someone has finished speaking, preparing a response instead of receiving the message, or listening with a sense of superiority.

A person may also assume they already know the answer, ignore advice that feels uncomfortable, or remain physically present while their attention has wandered elsewhere.

Recognising these patterns is important because they cannot be changed until they are first noticed.

How can you practise listening with your heart?

Listening deeply requires attention from the whole person. Rather than stopping at intellectual understanding, the words are allowed to settle within the seeker.

“A good listener is the one who listens with total acceptance in his heart without the restraints of the mind”, HH Guruji Sundar explains.

This kind of listening requires practice. It means putting aside the immediate urge to judge, defend or reject, and allowing the teaching to be received before deciding how to respond.

The ability to listen deeply matters beyond spiritual settings. The same habits can shape how a person receives feedback, handles relationships and responds to situations that demand change.

Listening with your heart is a discipline, not merely an emotion. When the mind stops filtering every message, a seeker can become more receptive to the teaching being offered.
