Franco Baresi, one of football’s greatest defenders and an enduring symbol of AC Milan, has died at the age of 66. The Italian club confirmed the news with an emotional tribute, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in its history.

In a statement on X, AC Milan wrote: “Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the club’s DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is.”

Baresi dedicated his entire professional career to AC Milan, leaving behind a legacy built on loyalty, leadership and remarkable consistency. Over two decades, he became one of the club’s most celebrated figures and a defining presence in world football.

Franco Baresi’s AC Milan legacy

Baresi spent 20 years at AC Milan between 1977 and 1997, making 719 appearances and scoring 33 goals. During that period, he helped the Rossoneri win six Serie A titles and three European Cups, later known as the UEFA Champions League.

His trophy collection also included four Supercoppa Italiana titles, two European Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups. For 15 seasons, he wore the captain’s armband and became the face of one of the most successful eras in Milan’s history.

His bond with the club was evident from the beginning. Even when Milan dropped to Serie B twice in the early 1980s, Baresi chose to stay. He played a key role in guiding the team back to the top flight on both occasions, strengthening his reputation as one of the club’s most loyal servants.
